I’m just genuinely and deeply uncomfortable with deeming a living breathing creature “just food for humans” and keeping it asleep and devoid of any sort of conscious existence.
I’m acutely aware that the current practices are far worse and that the chickens being awake and alive during them is much crueler and honestly horrific. I was a vegetarian for a long time but was bad at getting enough protein so now I eat chicken again but I always make sure it’s free range. Even that doesn’t guarantee the absence of cruelty though because there are no technical legal guidelines for labeling something free range. It’s something I struggle with every day.
But that new concept still horrifies me. To, for all intents and purposes, keep a living thing devoid of an entire life, even if that state of half-existence is pain-free, terrifies me. That’s the best I can do to explain it. I don’t like it.
This was what I wanted to say when I saw Vondell’s post about it. I certainly did not know how to word it, though. “I dunno it just seems wrong for some unexplainable reason” didn’t seem quite good enough.

Its terrifying because it is subjecting something with the same spark of life that humans have to something that is surreal and completely unnatural. its because you can empathize with the chickens. imagining if it were a human is equally upsetting.
